SLJ - Week One Day Five - Activity 2: Swimming to Safety

So this story is about two sisters who ran away from the Syrian war to find safety in Europe. The sister's name where Yusra Mardini and Sarah Mardini. In the summer of 2015, they had traveled through Lebanon to Turkey before departing for Greece in an overcrowded dingy. 15 minutes into the sea the dingy had broken down due to the engine failing. As a professional swimmer, Yusra didn’t want to let her fellow passengers drowned, so the sisters and two others jumped into the ocean and swam from three and a half hours in the water to stop there dingy from capsizing, saving 20 people. A year later Yusar had been recognized by the International Olympic Committee for her determination and strong swimming skills and became apart of the first-ever Refugee Olympic Team and Yusra then competed in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. From that day forward she has met a lot of leaders around the world and is aiming to compete in the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.

  1. Hey Richie!

Congrats on completing another Summer Learning Journey activity! Amazing work on re-writing Yusra's story! She must've been very brave to complete an act like that! If you we're in the same situation as Yursa, would you do the same?

    Keep up the amazing work!

  3. Kia ora Richie,

Happy New Year, what have you been up to during the holidays so far? Hope you have been having heaps of fun! It’s good to be back, I’m really excited to get back into commenting on your posts :)

That was a great recount of Yusra's incredibly brave story - how impressive is she?! I can't believe she swam for 3 1/2 hours! I can barely swim for half an hour, let alone that long. Do you think you'd be able to do what Yusra did, if you were in a similar situation where people's lives were at risk? I'd definitely give it a good shot!

Keep it up, looking forward to your next blog post Richie :)

  4. Hi Richie,
I liked how you explained why Yusra and her sister Sarah were fleeing Syria, and trying to go to Europe. I also liked how you said that Yusra didn't want her fellow passengers to drown, so she jumped up and helped the boat stay afloat. Would you be able to do what she did?
