It's always a good realisation to know that you've have tried your best, and that's what matters! Especially because it's not a easy job to help fly a plane back to New Zealand through rough weather.
I think it's crazy that it took 14 hours to fly from Australia to New Zealand when it can take about 3 hours now. Times sure have changed and developed! Have you ever been on a long flight somewhere overseas? I flew for 11 hours - it's long and uncomfortable!
